This collection contains two Civil War poems, "The Dying Soldier at Manassas" and "The Veteran's Growl." "The Veteran's Growl" was written by a soldier who was sent to Texas on garrison duty after the war ended. This collections consists primarily of his letters home to his parents. Atkins spent much of 1862 and 1863 in army hospitals behind the lines.
