The Campbell brothers joined the 1st Michigan engineers and served for the most part in Tennessee, where they helped build bridges and repair railroads. Scope and Contents This collection consists primarily of Civil War letters received by Emmiline (Emma) Daggett, of Clinton County, Michigan. Emma received letters from her brother Will in the 10th Michigan Cavalry, her cousin George Daggett in the 33rd New York Infantry, and other friends in those regiments. The letters describe the soldiers' experiences but are primarily concerned with home matters. The bulk of the letters are from William Eaegle of the 3rd Michigan Cavalry, who married Emma Daggett in 1864....

This collection contains two Civil War poems, "The Dying Soldier at Manassas" and "The Veteran's Growl." "The Veteran's Growl" was written by a soldier who was sent to Texas on garrison duty after the war ended. The author describes the miserable conditions in Texas and satirizes War Department policies and Union leaders.

Also included is a brief genealogy of the Lewis family.

Henry P. Attwater papers

Scope and Content

The H. P. Attwater papers contain notebooks handwritten by Attwater between the years of 1889-1930. The notebooks are primarily daily records of weather, birds, bird eggs, or animals that Attwater observed. There are also newspaper clippings detailing the general and bizarre weather for 1894-1930. Also included is “The Standard Catalog of North American Bird Eggs” from 1905.
