Most of the letters, written in 1874, are from Samuel to Elizabeth as he traveled through Michigan, Iowa, Wisconsin, and Nebraska as an itinerant farm worker. The latter part of the diary includes entries of Joyfield Township records dealing with such matters as tax assessment rolls, the township voting count, and township finance.
