The earliest letters (1836-1851) are to Bernhard Stohlmann of Allen, Hillsdale County, Michigan, a relative of the paternal great-grandmother of Emley's first husband, Clifford Migrants. This collection contains diaries of Elizabeth Cooper Matheson who moved with her family from Pleasantville, Pennsylvania, to Salem, Ohio in 1862, and to Riverside, Michigan in 1867.
