Scope and Contents

This collection includes single issues of American newspapers from the Civil War period which do not directly relate to other Historical Collections. The April 1865 issues of the New York Herald and the Weekly Journal of Commerce report the surrender of General Robert E. Lee and the assassination of President Abraham Lincoln.

Scope and Contents The Edward G. Granger Papers consist of a diary and scrapbook created by Granger, as well as Civil War letters written during Granger’s enlistment in the Union Army, portraits, and newspaper clippings regarding the extended family. Included within the diary, the first portion (November 29, 1858 – February 20, 1859) was written while Granger was attending Michigan Agricultural College, and discusses classes, work assignments, daily routine, and recreation.
