Scope and Contents

The records of the University Archives and Historical Collections consist of brochures and flyers, published guides to the Historical Collections, a records control manual (1973), Disaster Plans, photographs, a time capsule, a DVD (2005) highlighting the Archives’ resources, and other publications.

The Electronic Resources include images used in the University Archives and Historical Collections Calendar for 2003 and 2004; digital photographs and documents from the UAHC sponsored screening for the 2012 East Lansing Film Festival; digital photographs documenting the 2014 dedication of the Morrill Kiosk on the site of Morrill Hall; two student made video projects, Sparty mascot (2010) and class rivalries (2011); digital photographs of a local WKAR-AM Transmitter tower house; and materials from the “Through the Banks of the Red Cedar” Open House event, hosted at the Archives on September 10, 2015.

Historical Note

The Michigan State University Archives and Historical Collections (UAHC) was founded on November 21, 1969 by the Board of Trustees. Since beginning operations in 1969, UAHC has been managed by several different administrative units.

1969-1976: Executive Vice President and Secretary of the Board of Trustees (jointly with the Provost)
1976-1977: Executive Vice President and Vice President for Administration and State Relations’ Assistant Vice President of Administration (jointly with the Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs)
1977-1979: Executive Vice President and Vice President for Administration and State Relations (jointly with the Office of Academic Services)
1979-1980: Executive Vice President and Vice President for Administration and State Relations
1980-1985: MSU Libraries (jointly with Vice President for Administration and Public Affairs)
1985-1996: MSU Libraries
1996-2012: Libraries, Computing, and Technology
2012-2015: IT Services
2016-September 2018: Associate Provost for Academic Service and Enrollment Management
October 2018 - Current: MSU Libraries


The Historical Collections were administered by the Museum prior to being transferred to the newly created University Archives in 1969. The Land-Grant Research Center (1967-1970) was absorbed by UAHC in 1970.
