Scope and Contents
This collection consists of Civil War letters written by Alvah Marsh to family and friends. The letters refer frequently to Marsh's brother Frank and to his stepbrothers Edwin and Augustus Holmes (see collections c.108 and c.109). These letters have been transcribed, scanned and placed online at http://civilwar.archives.msu.edu/collection/7-1C-8/alvahmarsh/.

Biographical Note
Alvah Marsh served with the 7th Michigan Infantry, primarily in Virginia. He was wounded in November 1863, and spent the following months as a patient and later as a nurse in Virginia army hospitals, where he also caught smallpox.
Marsh apparently received a medical discharge in 1864.
His br4other is Benjamin F. Marsh) (also known as Frank) who served in the 8th Michigan Infantry.
