Biographical / Historical

In 1954 a group of businessmen formed Greater Michigan, Inc., located in Lansing, Michigan. Don Weeks served as the first Director until 1968. He was succeeded by Leona Weeks, who served until 1975 when William Bresler became Director. In 1961this group was chartered as the Greater Michigan Foundation, with a Board of Governors composed of 60 members and numerous committees manned by volunteers. The volunteers are organized on local county and regional bases and are recruited from a vast range of organizations such as service clubs, businesses, industrial, labor, religious, educational, and cultural groups. Though the Foundation is active throughout the entire year, the focal point is its annual celebration of Michigan Week (occurring the third week of May) which proclaims the state's assets and resources to Michiganians, Americans, and the world.
