Scope and Contents

The Lynnette Gatten collection contains seven folders of materials primarily dealing with Gatten’s involvement with food services at Michigan State University. There are two folders of newspaper clippings related to food service, staff, and buildings on campus and in the surrounding area; a folder containing programs related to food service and the campus; a folder containing clippings and pages from journals and newsletters regarding food service programs including clippings from issues of "Serving State"; a folder with MSU Union information and history; a folder with souvenirs from her train trip to the Rose Bowl in 1966; a folder with family-related clippings and correspondence; and a folder with some menus from on campus and other restaurants, circa 1960s.

Biographical Note

E. Lynnette Gatten was born in Iowa City, Iowa on June 10, 1911. She received her B.S. from the University of Nebraska in 1935 and her M.S. from Kansas State College in 1936. Following her education, she was employed as assistant food supervisor at Kansas State College; assistant food service director at the University of Kansas; Food Service Director at Omaha University; Food Service Director at Martin-Nebraska Aircraft Company; and Food Consultant at Blackhawk Hotels Company. In 1951, she was appointed Food Director of the Union Building at Michigan State College (now Michigan State University) where she served until her retirement in 1973.

She was a registered Dietician and a member of many professional and social organizations including American Dietetic Association, Michigan Dietetic Association, Lansing Dietetic Association, American Home Economic Association, Home Economists in Business (HEIB), Central Michigan HEIB, Faculty Women’s Association, MSU Employees Credit Union Board, Upsilon Omicron, Omicron Nu, and MSU Retirees Club.

She published three articles in the American Dietetic Association Journal in 1944 and 1945. She also assisted in the preparation of the bulletin “A Guide to the Selection and Training of Food Service Employees” in 1947.
