REFERENCE MATERIALS FOR SPARTAN SAGA. Undated. 0.7 cubic feet
These files include reference material used by Lyman Frimodig in writing his 1971 book, Spartan Saga, a statistical history of Michigan State athletics. The material consists of early book drafts, notes and statistical lists of individual sports. Only lists which were not included in Spartan Saga have been retained. Of particular interest are the award lists that include MSU.
Arranged alphabetically.
NEWS RELEASES, 1942-1990. 6 cubic feet
The news releases are of two basic types. The first are the weekly newsletters, distributed to all newspapers, radio and television broadcasters, sports magazines and other interested persons, which list the past week's athletic activities. Of particular note are the statistical data for teams and individual players in the major sports (football, basketball, baseball and track) as well as sporadic reports for the remaining intramural sports. The second group of releases focus on human interest information about players and coaches, and were written mainly for hometown newspapers.
Arranged chronologically.
MEDIA GUIDES, 1938-1994. 8 cubic feet
This series consists of media guides, pre-season outlooks, and programs for various sports teams. Also included are newspaper clippings.
Primarily arranged alphabetically by sport, then chronologically.
MISCELLANEOUS MATERIALS, 1958-1974.
The series includes news stories, booklets, posters, press materials and pamphlets.
AUDIOVISUAL MATERIALS, 1903-2012.
This series contains photographs and audio recordings. Included are slides of the 1965 football team and coaching staff, Sparty mascot as a head on a person's body, marching band, and possibly the homecoming king and queen on the football field, and basketball, all from 1965. There are also slides of football from 1966.

Historical Note
Information releases before World War II were handled by the Department of Journalism and Publications. During the 1930s, George Alderton was responsible for sports information within the department. In 1943, the Department of Publication was created under the charge of Lloyd Geil. Two years later a position of sports editor was created, with Nick Kerbawy appointed to the position. Kerbawy resigned in 1948 and was replaced by Fred Stabley. In 1956, following the centennial of the university, the Department of Information Services was restructured so that the sports editor became head of a separately reporting unit within Information Services. Fred Stabley retired as head of Sports Information in 1980 and was succeeded by Nick Vista. In 1981, Information Services became a separately reporting unit under the Vice President for Public Relations.
