Scope and Contents

From the Collection:

The collection is comprised of three Series. Series I includes files from the Lansing Cristo Rey Community Center that were recovered by T. Mireles; Series II. includes some of the files of the Xicano Development Center, Lansing and Detroit offices; and Series III. Select files from the MEChA/MEXA files previously sited at the MSU Libraries. The originals were deaccessioned and returned to a MEChA officer. All series contains meeting agendas and minutes, budgets, correspondence, and printed materials regarding the activities of the organizations. The Michigan State University student chapter of Movimiento Estudiantil Chicano de Aztlán (MEChA) series also includes their constitution, membership information, newspaper articles and action files. Significant in this series is information on the student led MSU grape boycott, Book Check Out, Affirmative Action issues, Chicano Latino Studies correspondence and planning notes as well as the agreements between the MSU administration and MEChA on negotiated points.

Abstract

This folder contains agendas, correspondence, fliers and related activity materials. Included is a a 1993 budget for hosting UFW Union co-founder Dolores Huerta; 1994 list from the Office of Minority Student Affairs on CRU-MECha for September 1 through November 19; one sheet flyer describing MEXA and some of its accomplishments, circa 1996; MEXA activity notes including a Detroit House meeting in 1998; event fliers and budget for 1995 and 1998. Correspondence from CHISPA, 1992 and letters regarding hiring for the Office of Supportive Services position, 1995; also papers written by students for a Sociology class about a class visit by speakers from the Brown Berets, 1998 and a 1998 Washington Post article Plenty of Domestic Farm Laborers authored by Dolores Huerta.
