I Became as a Young Man Again: Historical Studies of Manliness and Analytic Psychology – The Shepherd of Hermas: a Case Study. Abstract: The “rational” approach to the study of historical texts has resulted in a denigration of “psychologizing” in the interpretation of texts. A case in point is the late first century of revolutionary visions, admonitions, and allegories known as The Shepherd of Hermes. In Pagans and Christians, Robin Lane Fox calls The Shepherd of Hermes a “jewel of the non-canonical writings. The work of Carl Jung on that text, however, does not fare as well in Fox’s eyes as the text itself where he summarily dismisses Jung with a footnote: “Jung’s wild, but entertaining, ‘analysis” is in Psychological Types…” I argue that a Jungian reading can supplement the work of historians of antiquity. h.
