American Men’s Studies Annual Conference (4th), Washington, DC. (Not all authors provided abstracts.), Mach 22 – 24, 1996
Scope and Contents
a. Bowman. T. Grief, Hope, and Men’s Future Story. Abstract: We live as an article of faith in the myriad possibilities of growth and change, in the confirmation of a working world, and the integrity of personal choice. When those expectations are shattered and life as it has been lived into adulthood is ended, not by choice, but through some external agency, then the accepted patterns of existence, the very strands that weave the fabric of our individual worlds, are torn apart. At that point the questions becomes whether we can endure at all. b. Harris, I. M. & Salt, R. Patterns of Paternity. Copy of Questionnaire on Fathering in American is included. For other surveys see Men’s Movement Surveys CMVF and also see Ian Harris’s archive boxes. Abstract: Fatherhood in the U.S. is no longer a homogenous, “leave it to Beaver,” phenomenon with dad working outside the home, playing a distant role in the family. At the end of the 20th century, there is a great deal of turmoil about the role of fathers in the postmodern family. On the one hand, many commentators on family life complain about absent fathers, culminating in expressions of alarm about “deadbeat dads.” On the other hand, there has been a rise in a father’s rights movement demanding the involvement of fathers in children’s lives. This research seeks to understand the diverse roles fathers play in their families. c. Rosen, D. Courage and Emotion: A Renaissance View of Past and Present or Did Romeo Wear a Cod-piece? Abstract: Romeo is a young man, and both his age, gender, and sexuality are important. He is bound by his desire to advertise himself as a sexual object using the marketing devices available at the time. Also he is a product of a specific class-bound masculinity.
