Scope and Contents

a. Boyd, S. B. Theological Roots of Gender Reconciliation in 16th Century Anabaptism: A Prolegomenon. A recently discovered reference to an unconventional ideas and practices of a strain of South German Anabaptists leads to a discussion of whether some of the members might have experimented with transformation of marriage and sexuality by rejecting patterns of male superiority and female subordination that characterized the prevailing sexist gender system. b. Davis, D. A. and Barton, E. R. Healthy Knowledge: Mapping the Field of Men’s Studies With An Ecology of Knowing. Abstract: In keeping with the theme of this conference, “Looking Back, Looking Ahead,” which is not only a matter of reviewing the evolution of Men’s Studies and hoping to anticipate its future, but also a profound spiritual endeavor of mythic and ultimate recognition (pratyabhijnahrdayam), this paper will present an ecology of knowing and a holistic methodology - - based on root epistemologies and neurobiology - - for mapping and guiding the development of the field of men’s studies as it moves into the 21st century. c. Harris, W. G. Something Is Wrong with Him. This paper reflects the author’s commitment to working for the liberation of SGL (same-gender-loving) persons as well as his continuing responsibility as a member of the academy, to continue the search for the truth regardless of where it leads. d. Mayers, O. A Father/Son Dance: AN Analysis of The Sum of Us and Its Usefulness for Men’s Studies. I have found help in moving my men’s studies students toward the goal of deconstructing and reconstructing ways of being a man that leads to an emotionally, intellectually, and a psychologically healthy life in the 1994 Australian film The Sum of Us (directed by Goeff Burton and Kevin Dowling) which forces my students to see the world of men – especially fathers and sons – from new perspectives and perhaps in so doing to learn how to do some revisioning themselves. f. Miley, C. H. John Wesley: An Early Exponent of Holistic Health Care. Besides his evangelistic zeal and founding the Methodist Church, he also made contributions to the health care delivery system of his day and provided a model of holistic health. g. Morgan, D. Absent Fathers and Women with Beards. Images of Masculinity in Religion (Co-sponsored by the Carpenter Program in Religion, Gender, and Sexuality, Vanderbilt University Divinity School). With the rise of the factory and the expansion of wage-earning urban populations, the owners and managers relocated to quite side streets and neighborhoods near the business district while the laboring class congregated at increasing distances from the workplace. The pater familias spent more and more time away from home, working at the office or factory. Responsibility for domestic order was increasingly invested in the ‘republican mother.” This paper looks at Christian advice literature and its impact on the above.
