Scope and Contents
a. Sanow. M. L. Do We Have Any Heroes Anymore? This paper looks at what boys learn about being men in today’s society. b. Schoene-Harwood, B. Goulding’s Boys: Bringing Up Gender in Lord of the Flies. The present re-reading of Lord of the Flies takes Patrick Reilly’s “profound parable of men’s condition” literally to criticize his generalization in human terms of what is in fact a gender-specific, primarily masculine problematic. Lord of the Flies is indeed a boys adventure story shedding light on man’s condition; it is a male-authored text employing male characters in the rendition of a typically male genre. c. Smith, S. G. Response to Redeeming Men, edited by Stephen Boyd, Merle Longwood, and Mark Muesse. This book is of great value in thinking about the relation of gender to human fulfillment. d. Stevens, D. Putting the Men into Men’s Studies. This paper discusses the development of men’s studies at Manukau Institute of Technology, Auckland, New Zealand. e. Tuss, A. Deconstructing and Redconstructing Masculinity in Manuel Puig’s Kiss of the Spider Woman. This paper looks at the novel/film as a multi-voiced discourse on masculinity with its characters both redefined and redefining. Redefined in their masculinity in a manner that rejects roles and the binary terminology of machismo and marianismo in favor of a diverse definition, like the art of the bricoleur, embraces the plurality of male behavior….
