NOCM File 1, 1986-1988

 File — Box: 135, Folder: 3

Scope and Contents

Agendas, Minutes, Organizational Materials and Rosters; Sexual Harassment and the Stroh Brewery Case a Report from the Fund for the Feminist Majority and information on the Stroh’s Boycott; Gay Rights Task Group, Dave Matteson, Chair.; Letter from Michael Shiffman to Sam Femiano of 6 May 1988, and attaching a copy of More on the Men’s Rights Issue and Related NOCM Matters. This is a follow up of Michael’s article in Brother Vol. 6, No. 1 (Dec. 1987) pp.5 & 6 titled Men’s Rights. On the same two pages of Brother is an article by Robert Brannon titled Strange Bedfellows, referring specifically to Fred Haywood, Herb Goldberg, Richard Haddad and Tom Williamson; Williamson (See MSU Library Catalog under these names and archive boxes 54 – 58 of Tom Williamson). Frederic Hayward in the Jan. 1987 issue of Men’s Rights, Inc, p. 1 sets forth his “confession” about the National Coalition of Changing Men and takes back his prior positive assessment of NOCM in that in his assessment that “NOCM has closed its ears to the needs of men.” See the “Confession for main players involved and Bob Brannon name appears again; Fredric Hayward sent Jeff Beane a copy of the MR News for Jan. 1987. Jeff forwarded it on to the NOCM Council as an agenda item with the comment that “Gordon Clay has been a wonderful model for me in helping me recognize the common ground we hare;” In looking for Michael Shiffman’s article in Brother, also found: Confronting NOCM Organizational Process: The Members Have No Voice, Neither are We Asked by Craig Norberg-Bohm, Brother Vol. 5, No. 3, p. 4 (June 1987) and The Personal May Be Political But It’s Not Politically Correct to Get Personal About People’s Politics by Max Rivers, Brother Vol. 6, No. 1, p. 4. Michael sees the reaction to the Men’s Rights Panel and “related furious expression of concern…connected with the alcoholic family dynamics is quite clear…What is the end result? The fire is put out returning the organization to the same state is was in prior to smoke screen dramatization. Is this victory or political success? In an alcoholic or otherwise dysfunctional family, it is perceived as a success due to the relief experienced at the completion of drama. But does it change the family dynamics or aid in the emotional recovery of the family members? No.” (p. 5). In a somewhat similar vein see an Open Letter to NOMAS Council from Michael Kimmel, Chair, Spokesperson Committee where he says: “What about those M&M Conferences, the one thing we put on about which most members are so proud? What does a person find when s/he comes to the M&M for the first time? An enormous amount of ironclad, rigid correct thinking on every issue; virtually no room to make a mistake without being trounced for deviation from the correct line. So Little spontaneous joy, lots of scripted guilt,” pp. 2 & 3. (Also see Box 130 – Craig M. Scherfenberg folder NN regarding Roy Schenk’s National Conference on Men &Masculinity (M&M) participation.). Michael also mentions Gordon Clay as having been on the men’s rights panel.; Gordon was elected and served two years as co-Chair of NOCM and served as the NOCM Mid-Year Meeting Coordinator held in San Francisco Area Jan 15 – 18, 1988, and served as the NOCM Committee on Organizational Growth and was Liaison to Men’s Rights Groups plus serving on the Women and Men’s Task Group with Gayle Kimball of Chico CA. Announcing Sex & Selfhood: New Issues for Men of Conscious with John Stoltenberg and Sex and Justice, Newsletter # 6 of the NOCM Task Group on Pornography, June 1987. NOCM’s Men & mental Health Task Group Newsletter, vol. 1, No. 1, Dec. 1986, Men’s Culture Newsletter (Winter 1987) of the NOCM Task Group on Men’s Culture, and EMV (Ending Men’s Violence) Newsletter Task Group Newsletter, Vol. 3, No. 2, Winter 1987 (See MSU Library Catalog for holdings of these newsletters.); Memo from Mark Maier, Male/Female Relationships Task Group Leader about Resource Manual for Changing Men; plus much more.
