Borges, Jorge Luis, 1972
Scope and Contents
The files contain clippings, letters from people accepting invitations to the MLA conference, and letters to and from Don (on behalf of Borges) to schools and individuals inviting Borges to lecture. They also contain schedules for classes at MSU, travel, and lectures, Borges' fees, and Yates' notes on lectures and introductions to Borges.
Yates invited Borges to MSU several times, in 1969, 1972, 1975, 1976. Borges and Yates developed a lecture called "The Four Cardinal Points of Borges" using the compass as a metaphor (a symbol taken from "Los senderos que bifurquen"). In 1972, they traveled throughout the US,which was also the year that MSU awarded Borges an honorary doctorate.
In 1975, Borges visited MSU again for the Modern Literature Conference held at the university. The theme of the conference was a "tribute to Jorge Luis Borges." That year, there was considerable hope thatBorges would receive the Nobel Prize. The collection conatins letters urging the Nobel committee to give the prize to Borges.
In 1976, Borges taught classes during the winter quarter, traveled to other universities, was awarded honorary doctorates, and culminated with a lecture to the Folger Shakespeare Library in Washington, DC.
