Biographical / Historical
The STEP (Student Tutorial Education Project) was conducted during the three summers of 1966, 1967 and 1968 at Rust College in Holly Springs, Mississippi. It was a collaborative effort between Michigan State University educators and their student volunteers, and Rust College administrators and high school seniors entering as freshmen at Rush College. Each six-week summer program was intended to improve student skills in the areas of writing, communication and mathematics. This archive includes newspaper articles and editorials written about the program from 1966-1968, course materials, notes and course schedules, examples of student assignments, program assessments, photographs, and memorial materials dedicated to deceased student, Jim Krathwohl. In addition, the collection includes printouts of Michigan State University web sites containing retrospective information about the STEP project, Martin Luther King Jr.'s visit to MSU, and material devoted to a reunion for STEP staff/volunteers held at MSU in January of 2007. Also included are several versions of photographs taken over the course of the project of its program staff, volunteers, and participants both at Rice University and at off-campus events.
