The early diaries (1847-1860) relate details of his court cases and only rarely mention his personal life. Records of various financial transactions are incorporated in these early diaries. The regiment, which drew many of its members from Toledo and Bowling Green, Ohio, served in the western theater and fought at Lexington, Chickamauga, and the battles around Atlanta. Scope and Contents This collection consists of Civil War letters from Othniel Gooding of the 4th Michigan Cavalry to his fiancee, Lucy Dexter of Milan, Michigan. The 4th Michigan Cavalry was organized in August 1862, and spent much of the war in Tennessee and Kentucky, in scouting and foraging work.
