This collection consists of home cures and recipes for medicines for various human and animal diseases, including cholera, diphtheria, catarrh, and baldness. Some of the remedies were copied by hand, others clipped from newspapers. The collection also includes a notebook of remedies collected by George S. Barber of Grass Lake, Michigan.

Carrie Usewick Harvey reminiscences

This collection consists of the typewritten reminiscences of Carrie Usewick Harvey, of Wexford County, Michigan, as told to her daughter.

The reminiscences gave an account of the family's migration and settlement in Wexford County, and Carrie's recollections of her youth. They also describe early lumbering operations and homemade remedies for illness.

David Woodman papers

This collection includes letters written by David Woodman to his wife Jane while he was in California in 1852-1853. His early letters describe the trip from Paw Paw, Michigan to the Sacramento area by riverboat and wagon train. Later letters tell of living conditions, social life and gold mining. Woodman became very disillusioned with California and especially with the prospects of becoming rich through gold mining. The collection also includes home remedies for diphtheria and catarrh.

Osband of Wayne County, Michigan, kept during his service in the Civil War.The diary entries express alarm at the "profanity and wickedness" among the soldiers (December 23, 1861), describe exorbitant prices in Nashville (February, 1862), and predict that "the war will not be of long duration" (January 9, 1862).
