Content Description

The Charles A. Flowers Collection consists of State News negatives and prints that Flowers took during his time as a student at Michigan State University. The photographs include a range of topics such as sports, campus life, People’s Park, campus and community buildings, people, animals, and feature photographs. Also included in the collection is a folder of State News Clippings, a majority written by Flowers. Finally, the collection further consists of negatives and prints taken by Flowers for Michigan State related unknown projects.

Biographical / Historical

Charles A. Flowers was born in Hulbert, Arkansas on May 31, 1948, to parents Samuel and Ruth Flowers. When Charles was a child, the Flowers family moved from Arkansas to Michigan, where Charles spent much of his childhood and young adult life. After graduating from high school, Flowers attended Michigan State University from 1967-1971, working as a student photographer and reporter for The State News, and graduating with a Bachelor of Arts in Journalism. Following college graduation, Flowers worked as a journalist and photographer for numerous publications including the Detroit Free Press, before moving to Florida in 1981 and working for the South Florida Sun Sentinel, the Miami Herald, and the Seminole Tribune. During his professional career, Flowers was a recipient of the Robert F. Kennedy Journalism Award in 1990, was nominated for a Pulitzer Prize, received awards from the Native American Journalists Association in 1997, the Southern Public Policy Institute in 1999, and the Distinguished Service Award from the Sierra Club in 2002. Charles A. Flowers married Leah Clark, and had four children, as well as two stepchildren. Flowers lived in Florida until his passing on June 17, 2019.
