John Gibson Parkhurst papers

Scope and Contents The largest part of the collection consists of the pocket diaries Parkhurst kept from 1847 to 1906. The early diaries (1847-1860) relate details of his court cases and only rarely mention his personal life. Records of various financial transactions are incorporated in these early diaries. The diaries of the war years (1861-1865) include battle accounts and descriptions of Parkhurst's experiences as a prisoner-of-war in 1862. A. Hall, and "Robert". Harrison Traphagan enlisted in Company I, 3rd Michigan Cavalry on September 9, 1861 at age 21. Karl Merrill speech

Scope and Contents This collection consists of a handwritten speech entitled "A Story of the War, " written by the donor's father for Decoration Day services held in 1897 near Grant, Newaygo County,. Michigan. The speech, a highly patriotic tribute to the valor of the Union soldiers, also compares military strategy and technology before and after the Civil War and comments of the importance of patriotism in America.

Kendall family papers

Scope and Contents The papers include Civil War letters of John, George, and Daniel Kendall, who served in the 18th New Hampshire Infantry, to their parents in Franconia, New Hampshire, and letters from family friends. Among them is a letter dated June 1, 1863 by William Houston, 24th Michigan Infantry, which describes the situation of Fredericksburg. Also found in the collection is a typescript (1962) giving a brief history of the Houston family.
