Charles H. Gorsuch papers

These papers contain military records (1861-1866) of Captain Charles H. Gorsuch, who commanded Company K, 38th Ohio Infantry during the Civil War. The records include clothing and equipment inventories, invoices for ordinance and ordinance stores, and equipment depositions. Also included are correspondence, legal documents and receipts relating to Gorsuch's involvement in farming and in business activities after the war in Ohio and then in Waldron, Hillsdale County, Michigan.

The bulk of the letters are from Hannah Wall Handy to her sister Abigail, who married Charles Clark. The Clarks moved to Grand Haven, Michigan, from Maine in the 1850s. This collection contains an account book of a general store located in Brunswick County, Virginia dated 1792 to 1793. One of the patrons of the store was Colonel Thomas Claiborne (1749-1812), a planter and politician, who represented Virginia in the United States House of Representatives from 1793 to 1799 and 1801 to 1805.

J. M. York journal

The collection consists of a journal that belonged to John M. York who owned a general store in Ionia County, Michigan. The journal dates mostly from 1899 to 1901 with a portion dating from 1922. Also within the journal are the recordings of 1913 auction sales by George Kelner. This journal may be connected with the ledger in another collection (c.00524); both were found in the home of Ludwig C. Winters by the donor.
