Smith and Carpenter families papers

Scope and Contents This collection contains four Civil War letters and a small diary of Josiah B. Smith, kept during his service as a bugler in the 8th Michigan Cavalry in Tennessee and Kentucky. The letters were written to Josiah's wife, Mary A. Smith. In the diary, Josiah writes about daily duties in camp, his letter writing schedule, and the condition of his health. Smith), and his sons (Fred, Azariel, and Frank R.), of Somerset, Hillsdale County, Michigan. George A. Smith owned several farms and with his brother operated two general stores and a grain exchange, which were later taken over by his sons. There is also a Handbook for Student Leaders as well as guides for student organizations. Also included is a transcript of a panel discussion of Spartan Wives members in an education department class on April 14, 1947. There are also scrapbooks which contain photographs, newspaper clippings about the organization, event programs and other memorabilia.

Included are materials related to the Rural Leadership School which was a course designed for rural church leaders. The 1948-1952 rural leadership materials include notes and outlines of the sessions which included topics on church leadership, rural life, home and family issues, and conservation. The 1955 materials contain a newsletter, session program, brochure and planning documents. Also included is one photograph showing people attending the Rural Leadership Course in 1955.
